X-Wing Vs TIE Fighter installation and setup for online play[edit]

In order to play X-Wing Vs. TIE Fighter online, the following steps must be completed:

Multiplayer lobby clients[edit]

To play online it is best to join a separate multiplayer lobby. The Microsoft Internet Gaming Zone (IGZ) quit support for XvT/XWA in 200X. After that, the community created it's own client, the [Errant Venture]. However Voobly, a fan-made commercial endeavor which resembles IGZ, has added support for XvT, BoP and XWA. Some still use Gameranger but the activity on it has dwindled.

Voobly[edit]

After signing up and downloading the client on Voobly, use the Links on the website to join the game-specific lobbies:

The Bookmark Trick[edit]

To bypass a voobly.com visit in your browser each time you want to play, simply can bookmark the link(s) "join the lobby" of each game. In Firefox and Opera you can go to Manage Bookmarks and drag-and-drop those bookmarks to your desktop. This creates a desktop shortcut for the lobby. This is alot more convenient and faster than joining the lobby over the Voobly website.

Voobly & Wine[edit]

Voobly has [Gold Wine Support] which means Voobly works fully under Linux using the Wine compatibility layer.

Errant Venture[edit]

[Errant Venture] support website This is the XvT/XWA lobby client named after a [captured IISD] that was introduced after IGZ stopped its support and before the community switched to Voobly for matchmaking. It is scarcely used currently but the lobby server is still running. Some gamers set Errant Venture up as a fall-back should Voobly have issues. Remember to forward the additional PORTS.

Unzip the file and run redist.exe. You might be required to turn on Compatibility and run it in Administrator Mode in Windows Vista and above.

Game Ranger[edit]

IP to IP[edit]

Although not a lobby client, another option is to connect with opponents using the XvT or XWA in-game TCP/IP connections. The drawback is that you are limited to matches with opponents that you have scheduled in advance. Typically, the gamers meet on a chat forum where it is determined who has the best internet connection. Then the player who will host must share his IP with the others for them to join his hosted match. IP data can be obtained via:
