==X-Wing Vs TIE Fighter installation and setup for online play==

In order to play X-Wing Vs. TIE Fighter online, the following steps must be completed:
*[[:Tech:install XvT | Install the game]] - Copy the game files
*[[:Tech:patch XvT| Apply patches]] - Get necessary updates, files etc.
*[[:Tech:ports XvT| Networking]] - Port forwarding and firewalls
*[[:lobbyclients | Set up the Client]] - Enter the online gaming lobby to find opponents

==Install the game==

==Windows 98/XP/2000 32-bit==
You can install X-Wing Vs. TIE Fighter using the stock installer from the CD.

==Windows Vista or Windows 7 32-bit==
You can install X-Wing Vs. TIE Fighter using the stock installer from the CD.

You must run the game in compatibility mode for Windows 98 and [[http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/ff431742.aspx as an administrator]]. Properties -> Compatibility tab -> click the '''Run as an Administrator''' check box and set the compatibility to '''Windows 98''' for the following files:
* XWINGTIE.EXE
* Z_XVT__.EXE

For X-Wing Alliance the files are:
*Alliance.EXE
*XWINGALLIANCE.EXE

==Windows Vista or Windows 7 64-bit==
===Manual Installation===
If the installer fails to work you are most likely running a 64-bit operating system. The installers included with the CDs are very old 16-bit and 16-bit support was removed from Windows 64 bit operating systems.

The first and most utilized option to install X-Wing Vs TIE Fighter:

#Copy the game files manually. For example: You had XvT loaded and running on another (32 bit) machine. Copy the files from that computer to your 64 bit machine and import the registry settings. If you don't have the files lying around anymore. Ask another XvT player in the [[Lobbyclients|lobbies]].
#Set up [[tech:regsetup|registry]] manually

You must run the game in compatibility mode for Windows 98 and [[http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/ff431742.aspx as an administrator]]. Properties -> Compatibility tab -> click the '''Run as an Administrator''' check box and set the compatibility to '''Windows 98''' for the following files:
* XWINGTIE.EXE
* Z_XVT__.EXE

For X-Wing Alliance the files are:
*Alliance.EXE
*XWINGALLIANCE.EXE

==Create a 64-bit installer==
This process is more time consuming and detailed. It involves the creation of an installation CD that is 64 bit compatible.

Markus Egger has created the tools needed to accomplish this task which are accessed here:

*[[http://markusegger.at/Software/Games/ 64 bit installer files]]

All documentation and support is provided there.

Notes on installation from the Tactical Officer:

With the arrival of Windows 7, it's only fair that more and more people will be switching to a 64 bit system eventually. Including your Tactical officer. The downside is that this would mean the end of your flying days: the LucasArts installers rely on 16 bit technology, and while this is supported on 32-bit system, that support has been dropped in 64-bit systems. Fortunately, one Markus Egger has decided to whip up some installers for our favorite flying games for use on 64-bit systems. The installation procedure as he describes it is not the easiest, but doable. On Windows 7, it becomes even easier.
What you will need:
*the original game CDs (for X-wing and TIE Fighter you'll need the Collector's CD-ROM package as far as I know)
*the 64-bit MSI installers available [[http://www.markusegger.at/ HERE:]] - just following the menu link Software -> Games. For X-wing vs. TIE Fighter, you'll also need the LucasArts 3D fix [[http://www.lucasarts.com/support/update/xvt.html HERE.]]
I assume the installation procedure he describes is for Windows Vista, so I won't repeat those instructions here. The installation procedure on Windows 7 is simplified, and is as follows:
*create a folder on your hard disk, and copy the contents of the game CD there
*run the executable you downloaded from the site and extract it into the same folder, overwriting the setup.exe when asked
*for XvT and BoP:
**XvT only: copy the 3D fix executable into the support folder created by the installer from Markus Egger
**run from a command prompt (start -> execute -> cmd) and go to the support folder (e: -> cd XvT -> cd support, assuming your extraction folder is E:\XvT)
**XvT: type the following command the "patch" the 3D fix: niftyzip xvt_3dfx.exe Patch
**BoP: type the following command: niftyzip ..\install\setupex.exe BoP
*doubleclick the *.msi file to start the installation process, installation should proceed fine now.

Don't forget to install the EH Ship patch too when you're done, and don't forget that you need to start X-wing Alliance once without the EHBL, before the EHBL can be used.

HA Dempsey

==Virtual Machine==
Another option is to download [[http://www.vmware.com/products/player/ VMPlayer]], or [[http://www.virtualbox.org/ VirtualBox]] (both are free) and create a 32 bit XP virtual machine.

==Real Time Strategy Games==
For those who prefer the careful planning of strategies and the decisive strike against your enemies. Real Time Strategy games are also supported in the Emperor's Hammer:
*Star Wars Force Commander (limited support)
*Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds + Clone Campaigns
*Star Wars Empire at War + Forces of Corruption
*Sins of a Galactic Empire
==Creative Activities==
'''Fiction'''<br/>
For creative minds that enjoy stories, the Emperor's Hammer allows members to participate in a great deal of events related to writing fan-fiction:
*Short-stories
*Poetry
*Run-on stories on the message boards
'''Trivia'''<br/>
Your Star Wars and EH knowledge will be measured in these events, which can be administerd via e-mail, message board or IRC.
'''Webpage Design and Creation'''<br/>
Events, competitions, units and other situations all require webpages for effective communication within the Fleet. Webpages creation is a good way to get noticed and promote your own fighting unit.
'''Graphics and other Artistic Endeavors'''<br/>
Creating original EH-oriented graphics is a great way to contribute to the Fleet. It does not matter if you think you are the worst artist in the world, there is never enough graphic art in the EH.
'''Newsletters'''<br/>
The Emperor's Hammer publishes the Dark Sentinel. This newsletter covers the entire EH and accepts contributions from all corners of the club. Give your work a broader audience. Be creative!
===Events===
'''Operations and Competitions'''<br/>
All of the above activities can be done as an individual effort at any time. Don't wait for some "official" event to come along to be active! When official events do come along, it is always a big event. Official events fall into two categories:<br/>
Operations and Competitions.
Operations are the Big Events. They are always Group-wide and frequently have many different activities to encourage everyone to participate. Because they are so complex, they involve many man-hours of preparation and do not occur more than once every few months.
Competitions are more local events. They are usually at the unit level or below, pitting squadron against squadron or platoon against platoon. Inter-squad competitions can settle who is the best flight in a squadron or squad in a platoon. Competitions may be run by anyone and only require approval by a superior and the Operation Officer for that Group.

==Space Combat==
X-Wing Vs TIE and X-Wing Alliance both have similar but not identical keyboard/cockpit panel display. Multiplayer melee dogfighting is done using the same techniques in either game. Missions are more detailed in XWA and not always of a military objective. There is an incredible amount of reading still available regarding the space combat situation and techniques for better pilot skills.

For better internet play you should adjust your game settings.

==Internet Performance==

Equipment effects performance! We are all NOT playing with the same equipment. Vehicle comparison; some drive a Prius and some drive a Corvette. And just as in a race between a Prius and a Corvette the winning factor is more related to horse power than individual driving skills. So if your computer isn’t a high performance sports car type '''EXPECT''' to have a disadvantage when playing those sport car types.

Online games in general have important dynamics that must be understood by all pilots. These conditions do not exist in single player mode. Understanding these dynamics and adjusting for them will enhance both your gaming pleasure and your ability to be victorious.
*quality of connection (56k, DSL, cable, time of day, etc.)
*quality of other players connections
*number of other players
*processing speed of HOST computer

All have major effects upon the game. Understanding what happens during a game (beneath the surface) will emphasize a few major points that each pilot must compensate for individually. Depending on the equipment YOU use these factors may or may not effect your performance.

#'''Connection Speed''': You need a good connection to the internet to avoid performance problems. The faster your true connection speed is; the better your performance is likely to be. A 56k connection is considered the minimum in hosting a smooth 4 player games. The internet is like a freeway. At certain times of the day there is a lot of traffic on the freeway (internet). As traffic increases, internet speeds slow down due to the congestion, and game performance is impacted.
#'''Latency''': Definition; is a measurement (in milliseconds) of the amount of time it takes for your computer to send information (called a packet) over the internet to the target computer AND back to your computer. This is often called lag. High latency causes poor multi-player Performance. It is important to have a low latency connection to the other players. A latency of under 500 (ms) between players is needed for a satisfactory game. The average latency (4 players latency total divided by should be 300 or so for a smooth game.
#'''Hosting''': It is a good idea to have the fastest connection host the game. If you don’t have a good connection speed and a fast computer don’t HOST 4 player games. You should instead join games hosted by others.

Playing a 4-way match over the internet is much more demanding on your computer hardware and CPU than single player mode. For this reason you need to compensate for the extra strain on your systems by lowering your screen resolution to 640x460, 256 colors, disable 3D. Put all the configurations to their lowest settings and turn OFF all sound effects. REMEMBER when competing with other players the most important thing is that you have a good frame rate so you can react quickly to your opponents actions

==Registry setup in Windows==
Game installation (automatic) consists of two primary tasks:
* The installer copies the files from the CD to the hard drive
* It creates some crucial 'keys' or data sets in the Windows Registry
If you can't use the automatic installer (Windows 7, Vista, 64 bit) you can still setup the registry ''manually''.

==Download and Registry edit==
===XvT for 32-bit Windows===
Download [[http://www.emperorshammer.org/to/xvt-bop.reg xvt-bop32.reg]]. After downloading the '''reg'''(istry) files you must '''edit''' them; (Right-click, "Edit") and ''correct the paths''.

===XvT for 64-bit Windows===
Same procedure as with 32-bit, but the registry path is slightly [[http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa384253(v=vs.85).aspx different]] (Wow6432Node). Download [[http://www.emperorshammer.org/to/xvt-bop64.reg xvt-bop64.reg]].<br />

'''XvT example:'''<br />
"Executable"="c:\\Program Files\\LucasArts\\XwingTie\\Z_XVT__.EXE"<br />
"Source Path"="d:" <- Change the F: to your CD drive letter<br />

'''BoP example:''' <- this might not have to be editted.<br />
"Executable"="c:\\Program Files\\LucasArts\\XwingTie\\BalanceOfPower\\Z_XVT__.EXE"<br />
"Install Path"="c:\\Program Files\\LucasArts\\XwingTie\\BalanceOfPower"<br />
"Source Path"="d:" <- Change the F: to your CD drive letter

===XWA===
Download [[http://www.emperorshammer.org/to/xwa.reg xwa.reg]]. The edit procedure is similar to XvT.

'''XWA example:'''<br />
"Executable"="c:\\Program Files\\LucasArts\\XWingAlliance\\XWINGALLIANCE.EXE"<br />
"Install Path"="c:\\Program Files\\LucasArts\\XWingAlliance"<br />
"Source Path"="d:"<br />
"CD Path"="d:"<br />
"Analyze Path"="d:\\INSTALL\\SysCheck.exe"<b />
"Source Dir"="d:"<b />
Change d: to your CD drive letter

The pathes listed above '''MUST''' match your installation paths. Note that backslashes have to be escaped ('\' -> '\\') in the reg file syntax.

Then [[http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310516/ import]] it into your registry. It will add both XvT and BoP paths.

[[File:Xvtbox.jpg|150px|thumb|left|]]X-Wing Vs. TIE Fighter and X-Wing Alliance are old games, but still hold a cult following of die-hard Star Wars pilots. Several clubs still exist and have benefits that 'civilians' all too often don't have access to: New mods, exciting flight models & ships, custom missions, and special competitive events found nowhere else. Many of these veteran pilots have been around since the beginning, and their knowledge and experience is unrivaled. Mingling with seasoned pro's can only increase your abilities and broaden your experience in space combat.

Honing your skills with players of similar interest is best achieved in a friendly and structured environment. Like the Star Wars saga itself, most clubs are based loosely on the military structure of command with regards to Space Fleets. Rank is assigned, responsibility is delegated, and awards are earned. If you 'just want to fly', there is plenty of room for a simplistic Fighter Pilot position. If you are of Officer caliber, a rewarding career in Fleet Command is within your reach. For space combat to survive, we need a dedicated community with structure, enthusiasm and active members. [[File:xvt_cheat_sheet.jpg|thumb|250px|left|alt=Keyboard Controls|Keyboard Controls]]
The original X-Wing Vs TIE Fighter CD came with a keyboard reference sheet. Here is an [[http://www.emperorshammer.org/to/files/wiki/xvt_cheat_sheet.pdf A4 pdf]] or the original [[http://www.emperorshammer.org/to/files/wiki/XvT_Cheat_sheet.zip odg]] file available for download.

The X-Wing Alliance controls are basically the same.

Note: ALT + O takes a screenshot and saves it as a *.bmp file in your game root directory '''c:\Program Files\LucasArts\XwingTie'''. These images are sometimes required in order to receive credit. The file names appear as:
*frontscreen0.bmp
*frontscreen1.bmp

...and so on in sequence until you move or delete them.

==TIE Fighter==

'''TIE Fighter''' contains a lot of keyboard controls, but they aren't as daunting as they look. There are only a few which are used constantly throughout the game, and they become second-nature very quickly. It should be noted that a few controls are specific to the craft you are flying.

== Introduction ==

Joining a space combat club adds immeasurably to the fun, community, and friendship within the framework of a dedicated Star Wars role-playing simulation.

== History ==
On April 29, 1997, [http://www.lucasarts.com/ Lucasarts], in conjunction with Totally Games, released the multiplayer legacy of award-winning space simulators X-Wing and TIE-Fighter. Using a state-of-the-art (for the time) network code, Totally Games brought together the nobility of the Rebel Alliance and the martial engine that is the Galactic Empire in a head to head battle called X-wing Vs TIE-Fighter.

== Future ==
A reboot of the X-Wing and TIE Fighter series is long awaited by numerous fans, but hasn't been officially announced by any company. There are lots of ideas for a serious remake. We have collated the best of them in the Reboot article.

== Gameplay ==
Other organizations still plays this now classic game at Voobly. These clubs provide organization and structure allowing instruction and communication to meet the needs of the XvT/XWA community.

[[http://www.battlestats.com Battlestats]] (or BSC) offers gaming support and statistics record keeping. Members enroll here as well (all sites are free) to enhance the gaming experience.

Matchmaking can be done through the Gaming Site [[http://www.voobly.com Voobly]]. It brings with it most components of the old Internet Gaming Zone, including individual game rooms, a global chat, and a private message service. Come enjoy the splendor of Star Wars space combat at its finest!

==Multiplayer lobby clients==

To play online it is best to join a separate multiplayer lobby. The Microsoft Internet Gaming Zone (IGZ) quit support for XvT/XWA in 200X. After that, the community created it's own client, the [[http://www.lukasrediger.com/xvt/default.htm Errant Venture]]. However ''Voobly'', a fan-made commercial endeavor which resembles IGZ, has added support for XvT, BoP and XWA. Some still use Gameranger but the activity on it has dwindled.
===Voobly===
*'''[[http://www.voobly.com/ Voobly]] website'''

After signing up and downloading the client on Voobly, use the Links on the website to join the game-specific lobbies:
*[[http://www.voobly.com/games/view/44 XvT lobby]]
*[[http://www.voobly.com/games/view/45 XWA lobby]]
====The Bookmark Trick====
To bypass a voobly.com visit in your browser each time you want to play, simply can bookmark the link(s) "join the lobby" of each game. In Firefox and Opera you can go to ''Manage Bookmarks'' and drag-and-drop those bookmarks to your desktop. This creates a ''desktop shortcut'' for the lobby. This is alot more convenient and faster than joining the lobby over the Voobly website.
====Voobly & Wine====
Voobly has '''[[http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=18916&iTestingId=48168 Gold Wine Support]]''' which means Voobly works fully under Linux using the Wine compatibility layer.

===Errant Venture===
[[http://www.lukasrediger.com/xvt/default.htm Errant Venture]] support website
This is the XvT/XWA lobby client named after a [[http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Errant_Venture captured IISD]] that was introduced after IGZ stopped its support and before the community switched to Voobly for matchmaking. It is scarcely used currently but the lobby server is still running. Some gamers set Errant Venture up as a fall-back should Voobly have issues. Remember to forward the additional '''[[:Tech:ports XvT|PORTS]]'''.

Unzip the file and run redist.exe. You might be required to turn on Compatibility and run it in ''Administrator Mode'' in '''Windows Vista and above'''.

===Game Ranger===
*[[http://www.gameranger.com/ Game Ranger]] website

===IP to IP===
Although not a lobby client, another option is to connect with opponents using the XvT or XWA in-game TCP/IP connections. The drawback is that you are limited to matches with opponents that you have scheduled in advance. Typically, the gamers meet on a chat forum where it is determined who has the best internet connection. Then the player who will host must share his IP with the others for them to join his hosted match. IP data can be obtained via:
*[[http://www.google.com/ Google]] search '''my ip'''
*[[http://www.whatsmyip.org/ What's My IP]] website

==Set up port forwards==

Most gamers today sit behind a router which has an active firewall running that is blocking all ports from incoming connections. In addition, most also have a local firewall (Windows Firewall, McAfee, AVG, Norton, etc.). These need to be configured in order to fly in the multiplayer environment.

This is the most crucial and also the most error prone part of the process. It may seem to be a complicated and time consuming process but don't give up. There are only a few things you have to configure.
#The router
#The firewall

Both XvT and XWA were designed to use the [[http://support.microsoft.com/kb/240429/EN-US/ old DirectPlay]] version and therefore require open ports for incoming connections.

*Determine your [[http://www.ehow.com/how_5147267_local-ip.html your local/LAN IP address]]. This is your computer address within your network.
*Log into your router web interface. For example go to ''http://192.168.1.1'' if your local IP is ''192.168.1.X''.

Forward these ports to your local/LAN IP:
*'''2300-2400 TCP+UDP'''
*'''6073 UDP'''
*'''47624 TCP'''
*'''1001 TCP+UDP''' - Errant Venture ONLY
*'''2403-2404 TCP+UDP''' - Errant Venture ONLY

If you need help configuring your router, visit [[http://portforward.com PortForward.com]]. Determine your router model and look at screen shots to assist you in the setup. It is best to ensure that your port forwards work '''BEFORE''' attempting to enter into matches with other players! You can use this [[http://portforward.com/help/portcheck.htm Port Check Utitity]] for this purpose.

== Local Firewall==
If you have a local firewall on your computer, like ''Windows Firewall'' or some other security software enabled you need to create exceptions for:

* '''C:\Program Files\LucasArts\XWingTie\Z_XVT__.EXE''' or whatever path you installed XvT into.
* '''C:\WINDOWS\system32\dplaysvr.exe'''

In Windows XP do this under Control Panel -> Windows Firewall or Security Center (scroll down to Windows Firewall there) -> Exceptions -> Add Program...

#Copy the game files manually. For example: You had XvT loaded and running on another machine. Copy the files from that computer to your 64 bit machine. If you don't have the files lying around anymore. Ask another XvT player in the [[Lobbyclients|lobbies]].

== Introduction ==

Joining a space combat club adds immeasurably to the fun, community, and friendship within the framework of a dedicated Star Wars role-playing simulation.

== History ==

== Future ==
A reboot of the X-Wing and TIE Fighter series is long awaited by numerous fans, but hasn't been officially announced by any company. There are lots of ideas for a serious remake. We have collated the best of them in the Reboot article.

== Gameplay ==

==Registry setup in Windows==

==File Download==
===XvT for 32-bit Windows===
Download [[http://www.emperorshammer.org/to/xvt-bop.reg xvt-bop32.reg]] and '''edit''' it. Make sure the paths to your game are correct.

===XvT for 64-bit Windows===
Same procedure as with 32-bit, but the registry path is slightly [[http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa384253(v=vs.85).aspx different]] (Wow6432Node). Download [[http://www.emperorshammer.org/to/xvt-bop64.reg xvt-bop64.reg]].

===XWA===
Download [[http://www.emperorshammer.org/to/xwa.reg xwa.reg]]. The edit procedure is similar to XvT.

==Edit procedures==
After downloading the '''reg'''(istry) files, '''edit''' them first (Right-click, "Edit") and ''correct the paths'':

===XvT example:===
"Executable"="c:\\Program Files\\LucasArts\\XwingTie\\Z_xvt__.exe"<br />
"Install Path"="c:\\Program Files\\LucasArts\\XwingTie"<br />
"Source Path"="d:"<br />
===BoP example:===
"Executable"="c:\\Program Files\\LucasArts\\XwingTie\\BalanceOfPower\\Z_xvt__.exe"<br />
"Install Path"="c:\\Program Files\\LucasArts\\XwingTie\\BalanceOfPower"<br />
"Source Path"="d:"<br />
===XWA example:===
"Executable"="c:\\Program Files\\LucasArts\\XWingAlliance\\XWINGALLIANCE.EXE"
"Install Path"="c:\\Program Files\\LucasArts\\XWingAlliance"<br />
"Source Path"="d:"<br />
"CD Path"="d:"<br />
"Source Dir"="c:\\Program Files\\LucasArts\\XWingAlliance"

The pathes listed above '''MUST''' match your installation paths. Note that backslashes have to be escaped ('\' -> '\\') in the reg file syntax.

Then [[http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310516/ import]] it into your registry. It will add both XvT and BoP paths.

*[[:Tech:install XvT | Install the game]] - Copy the game files
*[[:Tech:patch XvT| Apply patches]] - Get necessary updates, files etc.

==Install the game==

==Windows 98/XP/2000 32-bit==
You can install X-Wing Vs. TIE Fighter using the stock installer from the CD.

==Windows Vista or Windows 7 32-bit==
You can install X-Wing Vs. TIE Fighter using the stock installer from the CD.

You have to run the game in compatibility mode for Windows 98 and [[http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/ff431742.aspx as an administrator]], which can be done by right-clicking ("Properties") the following files:
* xvstie.exe
* Z_XVT__.EXE

==Windows Vista or Windows 7 64-bit==
Install manually<br />
Unfortunately the stock installer that comes with the XvT CD won't run in a 64-bit operating system. Basically you have two options.

The first and most option is to install X-Wing Vs TIE Fighter is to:

#Copy the game files manually. You can use any old installation for that, regardless on which operating system you ran it there. If you don't have the files lying around anymore. Ask another XvT player in the [[Lobbyclients|lobbies]].
#Set up [[tech:regsetup|registry]] manually

Having done that, you have to run the game in compatibility mode for Windows 98 and [[http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/ff431742.aspx as an administrator]], which can be done by right-clicking the files:
*xvstie.exe
*Z_XVT__.EXE

Properties -> Compatibility tab -> click the "//Run as an Administrator//" check box and set the compatibility to Windows 98. Here's some official [[http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/ff431742.aspx documentation]] from Microsoft for it.

== 64-bit installer ==
The second and more complicated option you have is to forge a 64-bit compatible msi installer version for the XvT CD.

In this case you have some extra work to do, because Windows 7 systems are incompatible to the old 16-bit installer provided by the XvT disc. So what you need is a [[http://markusegger.at/Software/Games/ modified version]] of the installer by Markus Egger. All the documentation is found there, so we don't provide any support for it here.

== History ==

== Future ==
A reboot of the X-Wing and TIE Fighter series is long awaited by numerous fans, but hasn't been officially announced by any company. There are lots of ideas for a serious remake. We have collated the best of them in the Reboot article.

== Gameplay ==
Other organizations still plays this now classic game at Voobly. These clubs provide organization and structure allowing instruction and communication to meet the needs of the XvT/XWA community.

Battlestats (BSC) offers gaming support and statistics record keeping. Members enroll here as well (all sites are free) to enhance the gaming experience.

Matchmaking can be done through the Gaming Site Voobly. It brings with it most components of the old Internet Gaming Zone, including individual game rooms, a global chat, and a private message service. Come enjoy the splendor of Star Wars space combat at its finest!

Most gamers today sit behind a router which has an active firewall running that is blocking all ports from incoming connections. Most also have a local firewall (Windows Firewall, McAfee, AVG, Norton, etc.). These need to be configured in order to fly in the multiplayer environment.

This is the most crucial and also most error prone part of the process. It may seem to be a complicated and time consuming process but don't give up. There are only a few things you have to configure.
#The router
#The firewall

Both XvT and XWA were designed to use the [[http://support.microsoft.com/kb/240429/EN-US/ old DirectPlay]] version and therefore require open ports for incoming connections, even the 'client side' gamer.

*Determine your [[http://www.ehow.com/how_5147267_local-ip.html your local/LAN IP address]].
*Log into your router web interface. For example go to ''http://192.168.1.1'' if your local IP is ''192.168.1.X''.

Forward these ports to your local/LAN IP:
*'''2300-2400 TCP+UDP'''
*'''1001 TCP+UDP''' - Errant Venture ONLY
*'''2403-2404 TCP+UDP''' - Errant Venture ONLY

If you need help configuring your router, visit [[http://portforward.com PortForward.com]]. Determine your router model and look at screen shots to assist you in the setup.
==Multiplayer lobby clients==

To play online you need a separate multiplayer lobby. The Microsoft Internet Gaming Zone (IGZ) quit support for XvT/XWA in 200X. After that, the community created it's own client, the [[http://www.lukasrediger.com/xvt/default.htm Errant Venture]]. However ''Voobly'', a fan-made commercial endeavor which resembles IGZ, has added support for XvT, XWA and even BoP. Some people still use gameranger, but the activity there is very low.
===Voobly===
*'''[[http://www.voobly.com/ Voobly]] website'''

After signing up there, you download the client and use the Links on the website to join the game-specific lobbies:
*[[http://www.voobly.com/games/view/44 XvT lobby]]
*[[http://www.voobly.com/games/view/45 XWA lobby]]
====The Bookmark Trick====
To bypass a voobly.com visit in your browser each time you want to play you can bookmark the link "join the lobby" of each game. Having done that, in Firefox and Opera you can go to ''Manage Bookmarks'' and drag-and-drop those bookmarks to your desktop. This creates a ''desktop shortcut'' for this lobby. This is alot more convenient and faster than joining the lobby over the Voobly website.
====Voobly & Wine====
Voobly has '''[[http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=18916&iTestingId=48168 gold wine support]]''' which means Voobly works fully under Linux using the Wine compatibility layer.

===Errant Venture===
Remember to forward the addition '''[[:Tech:ports XvT|PORTS]]'''.

Unzip the file and run redist.exe. You might be required to turn on Compatibility and run it in ''administrator mode'' in '''Windows Vista and above'''.

===Game Ranger===
*[[http://www.gameranger.com/ Game Ranger]] website

===IP to IP===
Although not a lobby client, another option is to connect with opponents using the in-game TCP/IP connection.

*[[:Tech:install XvT | Install the game]] - Copy the game files
*[[:Tech:patch XvT| Apply patches]] - Get necessary updates, files etc.

== Multiplayer lobby clients==

To play online you need a separate multiplayer lobby. The Microsoft Internet Gaming Zone (IGZ) quit support for XvT/XWA in 200X. After that, the community created it's own client, the [[Download:errant_venture|Errant Venture]]. However ''Voobly'', a fan-made commercial endeavor which resembles IGZ, has added support for XvT, XWA and even BoP. Some people still use gameranger, but the activity there is very low.

*[[http://www.voobly.com/ Voobly]] website
*[[Download:errant_venture|Errant Venture]]
*[[http://www.gameranger.com/ Game Ranger]] website

==Voobly==

After signing up there, you download the client and use the Links on the website to join the game-specific lobbies:

*[[http://www.voobly.com/games/view/44 XvT lobby]]
*[[http://www.voobly.com/games/view/45 XWA lobby]]

==The Bookmark Trick==

==Voobly & Wine==
*[[:lobbyclients | Set up the Client]] - Enter the online gaming lobby to find opponents

==Install the game==

==Windows 98/XP/2000 32-bit==
You can install X-Wing Vs. TIE Fighter using the stock installer from the CD.

==Windows Vista or Windows 7 32-bit==

* xvstie.exe
* Z_XVT__.EXE

==Windows Vista or Windows 7 64-bit==

Ask another XvT player in the [[:lobby]].
#Set up [[:tech:regsetup|registry]] manually

Having done that, you have to run the game in compatibility mode for Windows 98 and [[http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/ff431742.aspx as an administrator]], which can be done by right-clicking the files:
*xvstie.exe
*Z_XVT__.EXE

Properties -> Compatibility tab -> click the "//Run as an Administrator//" check box and set the compatibility to Windows 98. Here's some official [[http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/ff431742.aspx documentation]] from Microsoft for it.

== 64-bit installer ==

*'''6073 UDP'''
*'''47624 TCP'''

==Additional Notes==

*The only alternative to this - NAT Traversal - is not yet implemented for XvT or XWA, so we all have to open our firewalls for the time being.

*If you need help configuring your router, visit [[http://portforward.com PortForward.com]]. Determine your router model and look at screen shots to assist you in the setup.

*It is ''wise'' to make sure that your port forwards work, ''before'' testing the game with other players! You can use the excellent [[http://portforward.com/help/portcheck.htm Port Check Utitity]] to do exactly that.

*Gamers wishing to use Errant Venture must also forward Port '''1001''', in order to be able to host games. '''[http://www.voobly.com/ Voobly]''' ''has replaced Errant Venture as the primary match-making venue.''

==Install the game==

==Windows 98/XP/2000 32-bit==
You can install X-Wing Vs. TIE Fighter using the stock installer from the CD.

==Windows Vista or Windows 7 32-bit==

* xvstie.exe
* Z_XVT__.EXE

==Windows Vista or Windows 7 64-bit==
