X-Wing Vs TIE Fighter installation and setup for online play

In order to play X-Wing Vs. TIE Fighter online, you need to consider the following steps:

Install the game

Windows 98/XP/2000 32-bit

You can install X-Wing Vs. TIE Fighter using the stock installer from the CD.

Windows Vista or Windows 7 32-bit

You can install X-Wing Vs. TIE Fighter using the stock installer from the CD.

You have to run the game in compatibility mode for Windows 98 and [as an administrator], which can be done by right-clicking ("Properties") the following files:

  • xvstie.exe
  • Z_XVT__.EXE

Windows Vista or Windows 7 64-bit

Install manually
Unfortunately the stock installer that comes with the XvT CD won't run in a 64-bit operating system. Basically you have two options.

The first and most option is to install X-Wing Vs TIE Fighter is to:

  1. Copy the game files manually. You can use any old installation for that, regardless on which operating system you ran it there. If you don't have the files lying around anymore. Ask another XvT player in the lobby.
  2. Set up registry manually

Having done that, you have to run the game in compatibility mode for Windows 98 and [as an administrator], which can be done by right-clicking the files:

  • xvstie.exe
  • Z_XVT__.EXE

Properties -> Compatibility tab -> click the "//Run as an Administrator//" check box and set the compatibility to Windows 98. Here's some official [documentation] from Microsoft for it.

64-bit installer

The second and more complicated option you have is to forge a 64-bit compatible msi installer version for the XvT CD.

In this case you have some extra work to do, because Windows 7 systems are incompatible to the old 16-bit installer provided by the XvT disc. So what you need is a [modified version] of the installer by Markus Egger. All the documentation is found there, so we don't provide any support for it here.
