Assault Gunboat

The Alpha Xg-1 Star Wing was introduced as one of the first hyperdrive-equipped starfighters in the Imperial Fleet and occupied a special, if unorthodox, role in the early Galactic Empire. While hyperdrive-capable holdouts such as the Z-95 and the BTL-B Y-Wing were occasionally deployed, these Clone Wars-era ships were outclassed by the T-65 X-Wing and later Y-Wing models, and thus were typically relegated to basic planetary defense [cite: wookiepeedia]. Before the deployment of the Assault Gunboat, the vast majority of deployed Imperial fighters were not hyperdrive-capable and required a transport ship for deployment, such as the Ton-Falk-class Escort Carrier or the Gozanti-class Cruiser. While this followed contemporary Imperial Navy doctrine- show up with an overwhelming force and strike dread into the enemy- it limited the types of missions and surgical strikes that Rebel guerilla tactics took advantage of. The development of the Assault Gunboat highlighted a shift in Imperial strategy and led directly to the development of starfighters such as the more refined Missile Boat and the multi-role TIE/d Defender, together which form the backbone of the Emperor’s Hammer Strike Fleet today.

The Assault Gunboat is mostly retired nowadays, although it may occasionally see service when the Missile Boat or TIE Defender is unavailable, or when baiting the enemy into underestimating a squadron's capabilities.
