TIE Phantom

From Emperor's Hammer Encyclopaedia Imperia

The TIE Phantom is an advanced stealth starfighter developed under Project Vanguard for the Galactic Empire. Built on a modified TIE Interceptor chassis and drawing on earlier V‑38 Sentinel research, the Phantom integrated a rare stygium‑based cloaking device capable of rendering the craft completely invisible to visual and sensor detection. Its combination of high speed, heavy particle armament, and perfect stealth made it one of the most dangerous experimental starfighters ever produced by Imperial research divisions.

Developed by Sienar Advanced Projects Laboratory, the Phantom saw limited deployment before its prototype facility was destroyed during a Rebel infiltration. Surviving schematics were preserved in the Emperor’s Top Secret Database and later recovered at Borus and Wayland, enabling small‑scale production by isolated Imperial Remnant cells.

Design and performance[edit]

The TIE Phantom was engineered with a singular design philosophy: perfect stealth capability paired with high‑speed ambush performance. Its armored cockpit housed a stygium‑powered cloak core, allowing the starfighter to vanish from both visual and sensor detection entirely.

Three dagger‑style wings were mounted at 120‑degree intervals, forming a trifoil pattern that reduced sensor profile and stabilized decloak maneuvers. The Phantom’s twin Novaldex J‑77 “Event Horizon” engines provided exceptional acceleration, enabling rapid approach vectors while cloaked.

Two Shadow Works Armored Heavy Particle Lasers were mounted along the hull, supplemented by Sienar G3x warhead launchers. The particle lasers were twice as powerful as standard TIE cannons, though their supercharged shots required recalibration and produced heat spikes that could delay recloaking. Pilots often drained the lasers into the shields to maintain rapid‑fire capability.

Sentinel lineage (Legends)[edit]

In Legends continuity, the Phantom’s development drew heavily from the older V‑38 Sentinel starfighter, one of the few Imperial designs with a reactor powerful enough to support early cloaking device prototypes. Some testbed Phantoms used a two‑man Corellian‑style cockpit for cloaking research, reducing hull integrity but allowing additional systems.

Operational history[edit]

The Phantom’s perfect stealth capability made it a severe threat to Rebel forces. Its ability to approach undetected, decloak behind targets, and disengage before counterfire could be brought to bear forced the Rebellion to treat Project Vanguard as a strategic emergency.

The original prototype facility was destroyed during a Rebel infiltration, halting mass production. However, a backup of the design had already been delivered to the Emperor and preserved in the Top Secret Database. These plans were later recovered at Borus and from the Emperor’s personal cache on Wayland.

Flying the Phantom required exceptional skill. Cloak cycling demanded precise power management, and particle laser heat buildup could destabilize the cloak core. Only elite pilots were trusted with the craft.

Legends notes[edit]

The Phantom was originally tested under an Imperial program overseen by Darth Vader shortly before the Battle of Endor. Although the prototypes were destroyed during a Rebel infiltration, at least one unit was preserved in the Emperor’s personal cache on Wayland, allowing the design to be recovered after Endor.

Early cloaking devices suffered from instability, causing the stealth field to flicker or fail entirely. Later variants replaced the cloak with a Decoy Beam system that offered partial stealth without full invisibility.

Emperor’s Hammer Shadow Works briefly experimented with a derivative model, the Phantom Mk.II, but the design objectives proved unachievable.
