.ANIM files are saved ANIM sections of .LFD files. ANIMs are not files. ANIMs are resources contained in LFD files. They are extracted to .ANI files by DF2. You can put them back into a LFD using 2DF. ANIM files are used for moving pictures in cutscenes and also used for the briefing background in Dark Forces.
