Biography

Before joining the Emperor’s Hammer, Aval’s military career intersected with some of the most tumultuous periods in Imperial history. After completing accelerated officer training—thanks in part to his father’s ties at the Corulag Military Academy—Aval was assigned to the fleet of Warlord Zsinj, a flamboyant and cunning strategist who had carved out a substantial power base following the Emperor’s death. Serving aboard the Razor’s Kiss, Aval flew escort missions for Zsinj’s elite capital ships and was involved in skirmishes against New Republic assets in the Quelli Oversector. These operations, while brutal, honed Aval’s skills in asymmetric engagements and deepened his skepticism of New Republic tactics, particularly those employed by Rogue Squadron.

Following the destruction of the Iron Fist and Zsinj’s death—as recounted in Iron Fist and Solo Command—Aval evaded capture and was transferred to Grand Admiral Thrawn’s reorganized remnants of the Imperial Navy. Under Thrawn’s analytical command, Aval served aboard the Victory-class Star Destroyer Trebuche, participating in precision strikes across the Mid Rim. Thrawn’s reliance on art, psychology, and coordinated fleet maneuvers left a lasting impression on Aval, who came to admire the Grand Admiral’s brilliance and discipline. When Thrawn fell at Bilbringi, the resulting chaos led to the Trebuche’s destruction during a failed withdrawal. Aval escaped in a life pod, eventually navigating his way through fragmented Imperial space until reaching the Emperor’s Hammer territories. There, he saw in the TIE Corps an opportunity to continue serving the ideals of order and strength that Zsinj and Thrawn, in very different ways, had once represented.
