The Fleet Medical Corps (FMC) was a support organization that was tasked with strengthening the morale of EH members and encouraging member retention. FMC members were assigned to units in some but not all of the subgroups. Doctors and their Nurse assistants would offer assistance but were forbidden from providing real life medical advice.
Background[edit]
From the Fleet Medical Corps Manual:
The Fleet Medical Corps is the salvation and founders of morality inside the Emperor's Hammer Strike Fleet. Our jobs are to serve, protect, and be a vanguard for the 3000+ personnel of the battle fleet. The job of a doctor is held with a heavy burden. You must care as the FMC cares about everyone of your patients under your control. We, The FMC, cherish life and our objective is to make it better for the EH and all mankind. Duty is to protect, Service is to know, Light your way through healing and let the Medcorps show.
The Fleet Medical Corps is an important Part of the Emperor's Hammer. The FMC is made of the fine Docs and Nurses, who help all the people in the EH, where they can. If you have a problem with someone, maybe a fellow Pilot, or a mate, and you don't want to go to your superior with that, you can go to your Doc. The Docs and Nurses in the FMC are not those of the Real Life. They don't heal your wounds, and usually they don't have any real medical knowledge. The Docs and Nurses in the FMC are there to help you with problems in the EH, mainly they help with problems between two or more persons. In the FMC, there is also a rank-structure. As in most Subgroups, there are positions (Nurse, Ship Doc, ...) and ranks (Lieutenant, ...). Usually, you go to your Doc, if he's not there, you can go to his Nurse also. The Nurses are the personal assistants of the Docs. So, if you have problems and don't want to speak with your superiors about it (or if it concerns your superiors), you can go to your Doc. He will treat all you speak with him about secretly, and won't share his knowledge with anyone other, except you allow it to him. If you have problems with your Doc (what we all don't hope), you can go to his Nurse, or his superior.
From Medical Officer Admiral Michael Tolwyn, in the inaugural issue of Imperial Vogue (circa 2001):
G'day Ladies and Gentlemen, I am Admiral Michael Tolwyn, but most people know me as "Doc Mike". I am the Fleet Medical Officer and responsible for your cures, healings and holiday requests.
I often get the question "What does the Fleet Medical Corps (FMC)" do? The simple answer? Nothing. We have no gaming platform, hence we do not fly or fight like the subgroups. We do not debate like the Senate nor do we slice fighters or ships like the Corporate Division. We seldom have competitions. But that's got a reason. The MedCorps is made out of fine Doctors and Nurses who work not in the MedCorps itself but in their assigned unit in their Subgroups in the name of the FMC. Units, in this context, are in the TIE Corps Star Destroyers or in the Senate committees.
When the publisher of the Vogue approached me, she asked me to "Tell me why we need you guys around". So, seeing as we do not real competitions and not even really work inside the FMC itself, one is tempted to answer this question with a "You don't need us". But that is more than untrue.
The Fleet Medical Corps is there to make the EH run smoother. With the Doctors and Nurses helping new cadets to get accustomed to the ship, solving matters and little problems between persons before they grow bigger and generally making some fun, they boost morale. They offer help wherever they can, be it in emails, be it on IRC chat or be it on message boards. They are the oil in the gears of the EH.
And this can be very hard job sometimes. In addition, we in the FMC have a unity I am very proud of. Without the pressure of competitions, the officers can focus solely on their units while getting all necessary help from the Corps itself.
It is hard to explain the spirit of the Corps. You have to feel it.
