Omicron Squadron was an Heavy Assault squadron traditionally attached to Wing VIII of the ISD-II Colossus.
Brief History
Omicron Squadron originally opened around May 1995, as one of the squadrons onboard the VSD Ravager. Around September 1995, it would be transferred to its historical and long-time home, the ISD-II Colossus. Initially assigned as part of Wing III, this wing would later be re-numbered to Wing VIII upon the arrival of the Sovereign to the fleet.
Initially, Omicron was composed of a flight of TIE Defenders (Flight I), a flight of Assault Gunboats (Flight II), and a flight of TIE Advanced (Flight III). Flight I would eventually shift to use of the Missile Boat, while Flight III shifted to use of the TIE Defender; only Flight II has remained with the same ship since its initial inception.
Omicron would remain a part of Wing VIII and the Colossus for over a decade, from its inception until its closing.
In March 2006, during a large-scale reduction of the fleet, the Colossus was decommissioned. However, Omicron Squadron was allowed to remain as a single unit, without its pilots being broken up and/or reassigned under another different squadron name, a controversial decision for the time. This allowed Omicron to continue to function, albeit at a new home: Wing X and the ISD Challenge. The decision to close Tempest Squadron to make room for the arrival of Omicron was not popular with pilots of the Challenge, but the preservation of a Colossus squadron was seen as a benefit to those who valued the ship and its squadrons.
Ultimately, Omicron would continue to serve onboard the Challenge until February 2009, at which time Wing X was reduced to two squadrons (Tempest and Tornado), and all other squadrons were closed.
Today, while still inactive, Omicron Squadron has been reassigned under Wing VIII and the ISD Colossus, and remains a critical part of that ship's legacy.
