Wiki Editing Guide

From Emperor's Hammer Encyclopaedia Imperia

From its origins as the Emperor's Hammer Codex, the Encyclopaedia Imperia wiki has grown to be a primary repository of EH knowledge including current procedures, unit information, historical information, and user-generated creative works. To support the continued improvement of the wiki content, the following wiki editing guidelines provide strong recommendations to keep in mind when creating and editing articles.

The Internet Office maintains overall responsibility for the wiki, with the Logistics Officer serving as the principal officer tasked with oversight of the wiki. Articles not in keeping with the tenets of this guide may be subject to revision or deletion, as appropriate.

Editing "Don'ts"[edit]

Do not include information that is short-lived. Articles that include short-lived or other transitory information quickly become out of date, especially without specifically designated editors.

Do not include information where the main site is the authoritative data source. For example, lists of recipients of awards and unit rosters are available on the site at any time and always contain the most up-to-date information.

Don't reproduce generic Star Wars information. The Encyclopaedia Imperia is intended to be a resource for the Emperor's Hammer, not a generalized repository of Star Wars-related information. Avoid creating articles that exist primarily to restate information that is otherwise available on sources such as Wookiepedia. When appropriate, the {{SW Wiki}} template can be used to provide a link to a Wookiepedia article. Encyclopaedia Imperia articles that overlap with Wookiepedia information might still be warranted when the article makes the content more specific to the Emperor's Hammer, or otherwise builds upon Canon or Legends/Extended Universe content.

Don't repeat yourself. Don't repeat information contained in the Wiki in a new article. Instead, use appropriate links (or more advanced: transclusion) to reference the information. "Piped links" can be used to link to an article using a description of your choice when the target article does not have the exact same name as your intended text. For example, [[Emperor's Hammer|Emperor's Hammer Strike Fleet]] can provide a link to the article about the EH using the "formal" name without requiring an article with the longer name to exist.

Don't create stub articles. Stub articles are those that are short and contain incomplete information. Just because a term is red-linked (i.e., an article does not exist for a hyperlinked term) it does not necessarily mean that an article should be created for it. Stub articles are often created as an extension of the "don't repeat yourself" flaw when entirely new articles are created to provide the definition of a term explained elsewhere in the Wiki with a slight variation in linking terminology.

Editing best practices[edit]

Focus on structure and content, and quality over quantity. Most new editors will have no need to use HTML code or complicated markup. Focus on creating well-structured content using basic Wiki markup such as headings, paragraphs, links, and appropriate styling (bold/italic/etc). The Wiki Editing Imperial University course will arm new editors with the information needed to be successful.

Use links and categories. Readers shouldn't have to search for your article to know that it exists. Knowledge that exists only in standalone, unlinked articles doesn't do anybody much good. Ensuring the existence of appropriate links to your article as well as from your article is part of the Wiki editing process. Additionally, your article should be included in appropriate categories.

  • The orphaned pages report lists articles that are not linked from any article.
  • The dead-end pages report lists articles that do not link to any other articles.

Capture both current and historical information. The best Wiki articles help to tell the story of the people, units, events, and history of the Emperor's Hammer. Use your articles to tell these stories.

Examples for unit articles[edit]

Unit articles are often one of the first places new editors leave their mark on the wiki. This section provides specific recommendations for unit article content and structure.

The following types of information make for poor quality unit articles:

  • Current unit rosters and names of leaders. (This information is already on the main web site, and probably more up-to-date.)
  • Stub articles with no significant information. (Provides no value to wiki readers.)

The following types of information and article characteristics make for high quality and useful unit articles:

  • Information about the origin and founding of the unit.
  • History of the unit denoting significant changes.
  • A list of historical unit leaders.
  • Unit banners, patches, and other media - especially historical versions no longer available on the main site.
  • Information about unique unit traditions.
  • Information about unit-level competitions and their winners.
  • A record of achievements or awards by the unit, such as winning a major subgroup or fleet competition.
  • A section providing links to the unit's roster page, citations, and reports on the main site.
  • Information is cited using <ref></ref> tags to provide links to original sources, such as EH newsletters or news posts.
  • Article is added to applicable categories.

Commendation of Excellence criteria[edit]

Effective 1 July 2026, the Commendation of Excellence may be awarded to members for Wiki editing activities performed in keeping with the following requirements.

  • The member contribution's is an article collection. An article collection is defined as a group of related articles constructed in compliance with this criteria.
  • All articles in the collection are constructed in keeping with the principles outlined in the Wiki Editing Guide. The articles contain high-quality content, with the use of accompanying images/graphics when appropriate.
  • The article collection focuses on expanding the long-term body of knowledge of the Emperor's Hammer. It minimizes content that is temporary/transitory, subject to frequent change, or duplicative of information contained within a more authoritative data source such as the main web site.
  • Individual articles are properly and uniformly structured according to the article structure guide.
  • The articles contain proper links and are added to applicable categories. When appropriate, new categories are created. Articles are linked to from other articles in the Wiki.
  • The member created the article collection generally from scratch (in the case of new article collections).
  • The member served as the primary/lead editor over a period of time with significant contributions to the article collection (in the case of existing article collections).
  • While the intent of this criteria is to recognize work of an individual, the nature of wiki editing on a large article collection could result in a collaboration where more than a single editor could be recognized. Such situations will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis by the recommendation and approval authorities with a view of ensuring that each individual member contribution meets these criteria. (Spreading edits across a group of members with the intention of qualifying each member for an award will not be entertained.)

Leaders at all levels with knowledge of a member's qualifying contributions will manually submit nominations to the Logistics Officer (LO) for review. The LO will initiate CoE award recommendations in the database for final approval by the Internet Officer.
