T-65 X-Wing Starfighter

From Emperor's Hammer Encyclopaedia Imperia

The Incom T-65 Space Superiority Fighter, known colloquially as the "X-Wing", was a starfighter in service in the Rebel Alliance and New Republic Navy prior to 0ABY. Though withdrawn from frontline service, it is still in service in secondary roles throughout the New Republic, Planetary Defence Forces, and in the Infiltrator Wing of the TIE Corps.

Overview[edit]

Perhaps ironically, given its fame for destroying two Death Stars, the Incom T-65 "X-Wing" was designed for use by the Imperial Navy to meet the Empire's requirement for a rugged, multirole fighter to replace the aging ARC-170. Though the design proved more than adequate for the task, the Incom engineers found themselves brushed aside for Sienar Fleet Systems' latest creation; the TIE series of starfighters. How exactly X-Wings made their way into the hands of the Rebellion is still a matter of conjecture, but it is widely believed that Incom engineers delivered the plans to Rebel-friendly shipyards.

Throughout the Galactic Civil War and the early years of the New Republic, the X-Wing was ubiquitous; the majority of the Alliance/New Republic Starfighter Corps was comprised of X-Wing squadrons of various types. While more specialised craft such as the A-Wing and B-Wing were arguably more effective in their dedicated roles, the X-Wing remained the multi-role craft of choice.

Even following the conclusion of the war, the legacy of the X-Wing would endure. The E-Wing, though designed to supplant the X-Wing, proved too complex to be truly effective, and the A-Wing and B-Wing lacked the multirole capability. Incom would collaborate with Freitek to create the T-65's true successors, the T-70 and T-85 which would form the core of the increasingly-demilitarised New Republic Navy.
