Appointment ranks were and still are ranks that a member is given when appointed to a new position. They are only given if the member does not possess the minimum rank, and only in some cases.
Examples[edit]
The TIE Corps is probably the biggest user of appointment ranks:
- New Squadron Commanders that held the rank of Lieutenant or Lieutenant Commander were automatically promoted to Commander.
- Wing Commanders that were not yet ranked at Major or higher were promoted to Major
- Commodores were nearly always promoted to Rear Admiral, as it is not possible to be promoted to the rank.
The main Emperor's Hammer also used appointment ranks frequently, mostly Rear or Vice Admiral for Command Attachés, and Vice Admiral or Admiral for Command Officers. Sector Admiral and Grand Admiral are only available by appointment to Executive Officer and Fleet Commander respectively.
